SPAR
Assessment date: May 2017
SPAR has considerably improved its reporting and possibly its leadership maturity around the importance of building relational capital in its distribution network, both amongst independent retailers, as well as end consumers. Ethical values are emerging to underpin its business dealings; these may be tested in its efforts to build dependency on its wholesale and distribution services amongst its independent members.
Considering recent acquisitions, it is concerning that SPAR seems to have a general compliance approach to governance at board level and also in its attitude to responsible sourcing and the health impact of the foods it supplies. It is not clear how the company monitors and tracks customer feedback and concerns. SPAR is also silent on the growing obesity epidemic and the societal consequences of nutrient-empty foods that most harm the poor.
