At the time of the Walmart transaction, and no doubt in fulfilment of provisions (from government as well as Walmart) relating to that agreement, Massmart surveyed and reported on its material issues with good use of KPIs compared with its peers. However, the disintegration of measured performance and insightful discussion regarding material issues in this report, points to a leadership neither sufficiently, nor maturely, engaged with building the value of its relational and societal capitals. While the report still retains a useful structure, reporting is mostly of a compliance nature, filling in with weak responses to material issues.
