Barloworld’s report is well-integrated with values underpinning behaviour and an understanding of strategic drivers of value. Foremost is the company’s emphasis on developing stakeholder relations. Clear infographics and text, as well as detailed divisional reviews with comparable KPIs, provide helpful information regarding operating context and how this relates to performance.

Leadership maturity is, however, diminished by formulaic reporting on a standard set of Economic, Social and Environmental KPIs that show little appreciation of context, and fail to explain the significance for the business, or how the company would respond. Automotive does not disclose any KPIs relevant to relationships with customers.

Barloworld’s leadership speaks directly to the restructuring required to address underperformance and space is devoted to building human capital through good employee relations. KPIs are given, but follow-up actions could be better linked to identified challenges. The tone of reporting is bland and lacking in authentic leadership voice and drive.
