Relegation of the sustainability report to its position after the financials suggests that many GELSCE issues are not regarded as being relevant enough to integrate into the business. This is born out in the assessment of leadership maturity aspects: Pioneer’s understanding of the importance of material issues and their potential impacts on the long-term success of the business is poor, and without a good case being made for action, such responses as the company has made in some areas, seem no more than basic compliance with government regulation, or to improve the business cost structure in the near term. Only in the area of skills development is there evidence that Pioneer understands the general shortage of talent in SA and has a programme in place to build its own talent pipeline.
